INTRODUCTION

  1. MOMENTS OF FINALITY:

    1. Each of us has experienced moments of finality when something has been completed that required great effort to achieve:

      1. College Graduation

      2. The end of a military enlistment

      3. Boundary Waters Trip

      4. Seminary Graduation/Ordination

    2. All of these and any other moment of completion pales in comparison to the Word of finality that was spoken by Christ - tetelestai.

      1. This is not like the words spoken by an airline pilot who plane is going down, "Well, this is it!"

      2. Please notice, Jesus said IT is finished, not I am finished.

        1. He was not referring to the end of His life, but rather the end of His work.

        2. The reason He came had been concluded...tetelestai was a merchant's term meaning "Paid in full".

  2. THIS WAS THE QUENTESSENTIAL MOMENT OF FINALITY...THE END OF HIS SUFFERING AND THE END OF HIS HUMILIATION.

    1. Life had been no bed of roses for our Lord.

      1. He did not live a life of privilege or wealth.

      2. Trouble and treachery barked at His heals from infancy until the utterance of this final Word.

    2. At the speaking of this Word there had to be a sense of relief!

      1. Now He was beyond the constant testing and temptations of the Evil One.

      2. Now Satan's henchmen, the Scribes and the Pharisees were powerless to make their endless threats and powerless to hatch their plots.

      3. Now, more than anything else, the unspeakable horror of hell and all its torments were behind Him and our debt had been paid in full!

    3. At the speaking of this Word there was a clarion call of Triumph!

      1. You can almost hear the legions of Satan's demons doing a double-take when Christ uttered this Word, tetelestai.

        1. Undoubtedly the hellish celebration was in full swing.

        2. Surely, Satan saw that victory was firmly, and at last in his hand.

        3. But then came that word, tetelestai, and the silence of Hell must have been deafening!

      2. The next thing they knew Christ Himself descended into Hell to declare with loud and clear voice of triumph the victory heralded by that final Word... tetelestai..

  3. GOOD CHRISTIAN FRIENDS, PONDER THE DEATH OF CHRIST OUR LORD.

    1. Ponder the terrible price that was paid by Jesus on our behalf.

      1. Know with a certainty the depth of His love and the mystery of His sacrifice.

      2. Acknowledge the utter folly of our sins and it's terrible cost.

    2. But also ponder the wonder of tetelestai, and take hope in Christ our Savior.

CONCLUSION

Never in the history of the world.  Never in the history of your life or mine was such a word spoken that expressed the incredible suffering of any human being and yet in its speaking, there is life in the very face of death.  Do not hope in yourselves, for that is a grand illusion.  Hope only in the payment so dearly made by our Lord!
